This is a guest post by Declan Tonks, Student Recruitment Manager for the University of Southampton’s online postgraduate study team.
I recently held a virtual open day where we invited prospective students to hear about what studying with the University of Southampton is like in practice, and to give them an opportunity to ask live questions.
What a fantastic session this was! With a vast array of questions covering topics such as networking, the value of online study, and work-life balance of doing a master’s, I thought I would put together this blog post to share our responses.
I would highly encourage you to watch the event recording if you are considering studying with us. We wanted to share those questions along with our responses to help anyone currently exploring their options.
Will I miss out on the social experience of studying on campus?
Not at all. Online courses are designed to be highly interactive, with live weekly sessions and discussion forums.
In many cases, students find they build stronger connections than on campus. You’ll progress through your course together, collaborating and engaging in discussions. Many students also form informal communities through platforms like WhatsApp or LinkedIn.
Online doesn’t mean alone; it means connecting in a more flexible and often more relevant way.
Will I still be able to network effectively?
Absolutely, and often more effectively.
Instead of being limited to a local cohort, you’ll be studying with professionals from across industries and countries. This creates a diverse, global network that can open new opportunities and perspectives.
Will my degree be seen as less valuable because it’s online?
No, the qualification you receive is exactly the same as an on-campus degree and does not mention “online” anywhere on the certificate.
Employers care far more about the institution and the skills you’ve developed. In fact, online learners often demonstrate strengths in time management, self-discipline, and digital collaboration, all highly valued in today’s workplace.
What if I struggle to stay motivated or disciplined?
Online study is structured to help you stay on track. You’ll have clear deadlines, weekly learning activities, and ongoing support. You’ll have direct contact with tutors, regular live sessions, and access to student support teams. Many students find it quicker and easier to get help online than to try and arrange face-to-face meetings on a busy campus.
That said, self-motivation is important. The University of Southampton's online courses are designed for working professionals, and many students find that the structure, combined with their personal goals, keeps them focused and engaged.
I’m not very technical. Will I be able to use the online learning platform?
Yes. The University of Southampton's online learning platform, Blackboard, is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive.
If you can use email and browse the internet, you’ll be absolutely fine. There’s also dedicated onboarding support, technical assistance, and the option for one-to-one walkthroughs if needed.
You’re supported every step of the way.
How can I balance studying with work and personal commitments?
Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of online study.
The programme is designed for people with full-time jobs and other responsibilities. Studying can be scheduled around your existing commitments.
There are also built-in breaks between modules, and options to pause your studies if needed.
Are the assessments engaging and relevant?
Assessments for our online courses are designed to be practical and career-focused.
Rather than purely theoretical assignments, you’ll work on real-world projects that can often be applied directly to your current role, making your learning immediately valuable.
Is an online master's worth the investment?
For many students, the return on investment is a key driver.
You can continue earning while studying, avoid relocation and travel costs, and apply your learning straight away in your job. Over time, this often leads to career progression and increased earning potential.
It’s not just about the cost, it’s about the long-term value.
